Jelajah Malaysia 2010

Some photos from the national road race competition from the 27th April 2010 to the 1st May 2010 from Kuala Selangor to Kuala Perlis. Thanks to a relatively good weather, skillful riding, good recovery preparations and well coordinated road safety by marshalls, commissaires and police, we had a safe journey during the competition. There were no serious injuries.

Foot Contusion and bruise from bike fall

A young lady in her 20s came in with a swollen and bruised right forefoot and toes from a fall off her bike. I sent her for an X-ray which did not show any signs of fracture. She was treated with RICE Treatment, topical Anti-Inflammatory gel and some Cox-2 Selective NSAIDS. The swelling and bruising should subside within 1 week but she will be reviewed in a week.

Toe abrasions from cycling without proper footwear

I took these 2 photos of the right forefoot of a young cyclist who decided to ride to a grocery shop in slippers instead of cycling shoes. It would be prudent for cyclists to wear suitable footwear even if they are making short trips as abrasions like these are quite common otherwise.

Ulna Neuritis in Cyclist

Mark is a 45 years old road cyclist with a mileage of 200 km per week. He came to see me 2 months ago with complaints of numbness and tingling sensation of his little finger and adjacent side of the hand. He mentioned that he was 'riding harder' than usual and had occasional wrist pain 2 weeks earlier as he 'felt good' and wanted to do more.

He was quite happy to lay off riding for 2 weeks and was given some isometric and resistance exercises with theraband. Subsequently, when I reviewed him again last month, he was slightly better. I gave him some neurotonics (vitamin B12) and allowed him to ride but advised against putting excessive pressure on the handlebars.

He came back last week without any symptoms and he said that he was riding better now that his wrists were stronger.
